The first crosses on the Hill of Crosses were built by the people who lived in the land before the Teutonic Knights arrived. In the legends, they were left by the defeated defenders of the land, who prayed to their gods in the hope of turning the tide of the war. The Hill of Crosses is a place where the prayers of the defeated warriors reach the heavens and are rewarded by the gods. Today, the Hill of Crosses continues to surprise visitors with its variety. Some of the crosses are large and ornate, made with stone and brick. Others are small and simple. Some of the crosses are made of metal, such as iron and steel or silver like in the photo shown here. Some of the crosses are made of wood.
